Wed v Utd and the Man v Food Challenge

Special Occasion at Hillsborough
You can't beat going to Hillsborough for a big evening game, and the Steel City derby is always a special occasion. The 0-0 result suited everyone and no one, we could have both done with the win, but definitely no one wanted to lose.

Wednesday are now 6 points off the playoffs with 8 games unbeaten and looking solid at the back. Its still an outside chance we can get to the playoffs, but lets wait and see. A couple of interesting facts for you.
Did you know that Steve Bruce, the Wednesday manager, finished his playing career at Sheffield Utd as player manager and that Chris Wilder the current Sheffield Utd manager played for Bruce at Utd, its a small world.

As always we planned to have a pre match drink, but when the derby is on all the pubs in the local area have a closed door policy, which means you either need a ticket or you need to know the password to get past the doormen. So of course we hadn't planned for this, as we were unsure which pub we would end up at. Having made multiple attempts to enter our chosen pub including the secret handshake with one trouser leg rolled up technique, (yes this was before we started drinking) we  had to use guile and cunning ......... well we sent a text to some of our friends from the London Owls who were in the pub, and they managed to get us in.

I work with Paul who runs the London Owls and we have started to meet up pre match and put the Wednesday world to right. I don't think the City need worry too much, at this stage, about any merger between the Baston and London Owls.

One of the Kop bars ready &
waiting for action
At half time we did venture down to the bar, but it was the usual chaos, two bars with three people serving, it's almost as though they are surprised that all these people have arrived for a drink, you can imagine the conversation  "aye up, we've got a reyt rush on here, didn't expect this at half time!" Yep it catches em out every match. For a business that is so loyally supported they need to focus less on getting the fans to cough up more and more for all the grand commercial ideas they come up with and start to concentrate on people at the match, organising a bar at half time can't be that difficult. Anyway faced with a choice between the queue for the toilets or the queue for the, bar we opted for safety and concentrated on output rather than input.

Having manged to secure a ticket for the post match pub, (its not what you know but who you know!), our evening ended with kebab and chips. Having had a few beers it is sometimes difficult to make sensible choices, but we thought we'd cracked it when being offered the choice between medium and large kebab. Taking the medium option, we were faced with a meal that would be suitable for a family of 4. Still there's nothing like a challenge and I think we did it proud! It is possible that one more pre kebab pint could have tipped us towards large, where I think two days later I could still have been eating it. Man v food ...... you are messing around the edges!
